Winter Gear Rentals
Yes, we are open all winter! The Oxtongue
Lake store carries the largest inventory of rental snowshoes,
cross-country skis and camping equipment.
Reservations for one-day rentals are not required.
Equipment is available on a first-come/first-served basis.
Large groups and people requiring equipment for multi-day
interior trips should call ahead to confirm availability:

Rental inventory is more limited in Huntsville

Please note that we do not do complete outfitting,
nor do we supply food or cooking equipment (except stoves),
during the winter season. For short camping trips in moderate
weather, you'll probably find that you can make do with
your existing camping equipment, although you will find
that certain items (especially stoves) behave differently
in the cold. We do rent winter sleeping bags, which is the
number one item most people don't have. The choice between
traveling on skis and snowshoes is largely based on your
experience, snow conditions and the terrain. Snowshoes are
simpler, more versatile and much easier to use with a pack.

Purchase new snowshoes or a ski package on the day (or weekend)

Half-day ski or snowshoe rental
Rent expedition snowshoes or standard cross-country ski
package when we open, return by 12 noon, OR, pick up after
1:30 pm, return by 5 pm, and save $5 off the full day rate.

Camping in Algonquin Park
In Algonquin Park, there are several options
for winter camping. Many first time winter campers stay
at the Mew Lake campground, off Highway 60. You can set
up a base camp and do day trips from there. As well as campsites,
there are heated Yurts available, which sleep six. More
experienced people head out on the Western Uplands or Highlands
hiking trails and stay at interior sites. Very experienced
winter campers will follow carefully planned routes deep
into the park interior. Ice conditions are extremely variable
and only long experience can teach you how to travel safely
on lakes. To check permit availability and for reservation

Winter day trips by ski or snowshoe
In Algonquin Park, there are three excellent
cross-country ski trail systems. People generally snowshoe
on the day hiking trails or backpacking trails off Highway
60. Algonquin Outfitters rents cross-country ski packages
as well as both traditional and modern styles of snowshoes.
Discounts are available for extended rentals and we also
offer a half-day package.
